About Us
Don’t let our Southern drawls fool you – we’ve lived in the Sierra Nevada for more than 20 years, and, oh, the stories we’ve accumulated! Restoring the Groveland Hotel to its Old West grandeur allowed us many interesting history lessons of the region. We’ve also discovered many very special places nearby worth deeper exploration. Our Southern Roots run deep, we were both born and raised in Tennessee, and we still firmly believe in old-fashioned Southern Hospitality.
Grover is an avid golfer (but I can’t reveal his handicap), and he spends many days with friends at our local championship golf course at Pine Mountain Lake. When he’s not on the greens, he’s greeting our guests and helping them find their way around our property and our quirky Old West town. He’s our chief cook, bottle washer, dog walker, florist, as well as my dearest friend.
I wish I still had time to fly my Beech Sierra N2052L, but honestly, I’m more than content to share a bottle of wine and my knowledge of the Groveland area with guests and members of our community. I happen to be a bit of a wine connoisseur and would love to help you explore our wine list, which was given the Wine Spectator Best of Award of Excellence and includes more than 550 labels.
And yes, I did go to school with Elvis! Feel free to ask me about him, our resident ghost, Lyle, Motherlode gold rush history, our local swimming holes and waterfalls, or about my time as the sole female manager at Lockheed back in the 1970s.
Integral to our Groveland Hotel family are Rusty and Miss Kitty, our four-legged co-innkeepers.
We look forward to seeing you soon! Here are a few stories from our guests… Enjoy!
– Peggy Mosley, Innkeeper
The Memphis Belle and Elvis
Have you ever met one of those people who nonchalantly will mention things that make your jaw drop? Having dinner with Peggy Mosley was one of those experiences. Over our red wine and shrimp, things were revealed that elicited smiles, laughter, and amazement. Born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee, Peggy has Southern hospitality right down to her core. In addition to being a gracious hostess and savvy entrepreneur, she’s a pilot who spent years working for Lockheed, has even logged time flying a classic Ford Tri-Motor. She went to school with the most famous Memphis export, (jaw drop here….) Elvis Presley. They were childhood friends and shy teenagers, living in the same neighborhood joining other kids and teens playing football and corkball and teasing one another with youthful charm. As Peggy relates, “Elvis was a really cute and shy guy who was always strumming that guitar. None of us had any idea back then that he would become The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.” Now that’s something you just don’t hear every day in casual conversation. When you visit the Groveland Hotel ask any of the friendly staff to direct you to a photograph of Peggy and her classmates which includes the very shy and unassuming, young Elvis.
Pillow talk…
Chain hotels these days, with a few exceptions thankfully, rarely have much room for personality if they’ve sacrificed service for amenities or convenience. The Groveland Hotel falls completely on the other end of that spectrum with not only the history and customer service, but also unique personality and charm. And not to mention its close proximity to Yosemite National Park!
On a warm Summer’s evening…
…as I sat on a beautiful patio surrounded by lush greenery, dotted with umbrellas shimmering with twinkle lights, my insides warmed from chocolate lava cake and Zinfandel, I wondered for a moment where I was. On vacation in Italy? At a resort in the south of France? As the heady rush of my recent plate of pasta and the conversation of my charming dinner companions brought me back to
Reality, I couldn’t believe I was in Groveland. So close to my Sonora home and a stone’s throw from Yosemite, I had found a worthy vacation spot right in my backyard at the Groveland Hotel.
